Originally a small Coolstore operation set on 170 acres of farmland located on the North West Coast of Tasmania in Latrobe, the business was purchased by father and son, Kevin and Andrew Langmaid in 1990. Latrobe is situated approximately ten minutes away from the city of Devonport. Since purchased, the business has been steadily increasing its activities and turnover and has become well known for a number of initiatives they have made in the industry. Cherry Hill Coolstores started the initiative to grade seed potatoes in 1991. They were the first business in Tasmania to purchase a grading machine for this purpose and also introduced one tonne bins to the industry instead of using half tonne bins, which had historically been done One tonne bins decrease work and handling time and are therefore more cost effective than half tonne bins. Cherry Hill has also spent a great deal of time researching the cutting of potatoes which culminated in the purchase of a machine cutter in 1992 providing substantial economies of scale and cost savings in cutting of seed potatoes. Further developments have been undertaken in the past two years with the development of pre-cutting of seed prior to cool-storage. |
